ELLCGA Commonwealth Spoons

Entries open at 7.00pm on Thursday 22 April for the Commonwealth Spoons (foursomes, stroke play), which will be held at Musselburgh GC (Monktonhall Hall) on Thursday 20 May 2021. Entry is via the BRS system on the ELLCGA website, or by following the ‘Read More’ link below. The cost is £10 per player, and the closing date for entries is 5.00pm on Thursday 13 May.

The early starters at Gifford this morning had to put on just about all the clothing they were carrying in their golf bags, the old adage “ne’er cast a clout till May is out” was certainly true today. The stiff “breeze” made conditions difficult and although the sun eventually came through the wind didn’t relent. Everyone had a good time, the most common quote being “well I really enjoyed that, shame about the golf”.

Gifford was in excellent condition and the course was beautifully presented, thanks must go to the greenkeepers for this and thanks also to the catering staff who kept us going throughout the day.

In a very close competition the first three places were tied on a score of 73.5, countback was used to determine the places, these are as follows:

1st Linda Gray and Mhairi Tufail after a countback of the last three holes.

2nd Jane Nelson and Barbara Wallace on a countback over the last 9 holes

3rd Dianne Brown and Audrey Dunnett

4th June Elliot and Brenda Goldstein 75.5

5th Anne McAllister and Heather Neill 76.5

Congratulations to all for excellent scores in such testing conditions.

Linda and Mhairi, Dianne and Audrey, June and Brenda, Anne and Heather have qualified and are available to compete in the Scottish Final at Pollock GC (Glasgow) on Monday 2nd September.

There were no two’s today, a testament to how difficult putting was today.

The two’s money will be donated to the Babe Zaharias competition which raises funds for the Macmillan Cancer Support.

Booking is open for the Commonwealth Spoons Foursomes, at Gifford GC on Thursday 23 May. Booking should be made via BRS on the ELLCGA website.

The tee intervals are 15 minutes. This is because Gifford is a nine hole course. Please be aware that starters after about 1030 will be alternating with groups coming through from the ninth green.

Booking is still open for the Spring Meeting.

The sheet for the Commonwealth Spoons is now open. Please enter online with your partner.

As always if you do not have a partner we will be happy to try and match you up with someone. Ladies without a partner should contact Eleanor Black our secretary by email at and she will add your name to a list. She will need all the normal details (NAME, ADDRESS, TELEPHONE NUMBER, EMAIL ADDRESS, HANDICAP AND CLUB) along with a tee time preference and she will pair you up as in the past where possible. She will then contact you re payment.

Well done to everyone who played at Gifford today. The elements were not kind and I am feeling much better after a hot bath! Thank you to those ladies who played and marked cards which prevented any 3 balls going out until the 4 pm slot their participation was much appreciated. This meant that the golf was played at a great pace. I have to say the 3 ball at the end may have been slower but from their comments at the end they all had fun. Gifford golf course was in great condition and their greens were lovely too but the wind and rain took its toll on the scores and the players.

Gifford Golf Club were also very welcoming and thank you to Bob for opening early and to Shirley and all her staff for looking after us so well and feeding all the hungry ladies. It was difficult to pull yourself out of the Club after a quick toilet stop where everyone was warm and cosy. The results are as follows:-

1  Elinor Blair and Janice Reid(North Berwick) 86 (11) 75

2 Irene Gray (Musselburgh) and Anne Marshall (Dunbar) 92 (16.5) 75.5

3 Anne McAllister and Heather Neil (Renaissance) (22.5) 76.5

I will confirm those representing ELLCGA at Eyemouth on September 7th

HOLE IN TWO SWEEP (£80 IN THE KITTY) – no holes in two so I will give money to McMillan at the Babe Zaharias Trophy. I trust you will all be happy your £1 has gone to a good cause
