The early starters at Gifford this morning had to put on just about all the clothing they were carrying in their golf bags, the old adage “ne’er cast a clout till May is out” was certainly true today. The stiff “breeze” made conditions difficult and although the sun eventually came through the wind didn’t relent. Everyone had a good time, the most common quote being “well I really enjoyed that, shame about the golf”.

Gifford was in excellent condition and the course was beautifully presented, thanks must go to the greenkeepers for this and thanks also to the catering staff who kept us going throughout the day.

In a very close competition the first three places were tied on a score of 73.5, countback was used to determine the places, these are as follows:

1st Linda Gray and Mhairi Tufail after a countback of the last three holes.

2nd Jane Nelson and Barbara Wallace on a countback over the last 9 holes

3rd Dianne Brown and Audrey Dunnett

4th June Elliot and Brenda Goldstein 75.5

5th Anne McAllister and Heather Neill 76.5

Congratulations to all for excellent scores in such testing conditions.

Linda and Mhairi, Dianne and Audrey, June and Brenda, Anne and Heather have qualified and are available to compete in the Scottish Final at Pollock GC (Glasgow) on Monday 2nd September.

There were no two’s today, a testament to how difficult putting was today.

The two’s money will be donated to the Babe Zaharias competition which raises funds for the Macmillan Cancer Support.

The weather was hardly summery as play commenced this morning only to worsen when the misty drizzle unexpectedly turned to more serious rain. A few decided not to go out but it did  ease off and then dry up and those playing later got the best of the day.

While it is often said that Craigielaw’s greens are difficult the long list of twos today might suggest otherwise. There were a total of 13 with Craigielaw member Kay Lannin and Clara Young both scoring two twos.

There were a lot of N/Rs and a few lost balls but there were also a number of excellent scores including a scratch 70 from Clara Young, a nett 67 from Audrey Dunnett and a 92 nett 69 from Sheila Hershell who takes the Bronze Scratch prize.

The full results and list of twos can be seen by clicking on the pdf files below but the for a quick summary -there were 65 players and  the CSS was 73.

Following a late withdrawal for family reasons 41 pairs had a fun day a Winterfield.  It may have been cold outside but the welcome inside was definitely warm. Most people also stayed on to enjoy the excellent food. There were some great results and some not so great but the course was looking good.
